Loučany lies about 14 km west of Olomouc, on the Šumice stream. The local primary and nursery school runs a small two-class primary school, one nursery class and a school canteen. The local library is also on the first floor of the municipal office building.

The first record of Loučany dates to 1141 and gives the name as Lucaz. The Chapel of St Florian and St Isidore dates from 1724 and was restored in 1934. The cultural centre was created by converting the hall of a former inn; it opened in 1967 and was renovated in 2019–2020. Smaller monuments include columns with statues of St Florian and St John of Nepomuk, as well as a cross in the local cemetery.
