Štěpánov lies in northern Haná, about 10 km from Olomouc. It gained town status in 2020. Its parts include Březce, Moravská Huzová, Stádlo and Benátky.

The first written reference to Štěpánov appears in a 1201 donation charter issued by King Přemysl Otakar I for Hradisko Premonstratensian Monastery.
